Pia Palme, born in Vienna, is a composer, artist, scholar and activist. Her internationally acclaimed works and texts in the field of contemporary music relate to posthumanism, feminism and ecology. Connecting multiple disciplines, Palme prefers to design experi-mental and collaborative formats and that can be experienced as ecological processes. For example, in 2023 she initiated the collaborative music theatre group SONGS AFTER NA-TURE, a long-term project in which all participants are invited to edge beyond their main disciplines.
Palme finished studies in music, mathematics and projective geometry in Vienna and worked as a teacher in the School of Music of the City of Vienna. For her experimental non-religious requiem BARE BRANCHES (2012), the composer was awarded the Out-standing Artist Award of the Republic of Austria. In 2017, Palme completed her doctorate in composition at the University of Huddersfield, UK with the feminist portfolio The Noise of Mind. From 2018–2022, she directed the large-scale FWF PEEK project On the fragility of sounds at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, investigating the composer’s process in contemporary music theatre. Palme’s recent essays have been published by Bloomsbury Academic, Wolke Verlag, transcript, and Universal Edition.
